Meet David Karli | Physician, Biotech Entrepreneur and Orthopedic Regenerative Medicine Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with David Karli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what do you attribute your success to?

Without question, the most important factor has been perseverance. I Founded Greyledge Technologies, a biotechnology company researching stem cells and cell therapies, in 2010 and it was in development for several years before that. I left a very successful clinical practice in Vail, CO after 20 years of development to start the Karli Center in Miami at age 52, because I had taken the practice as far as I could within that environment, which wasn’t the vision that I had as to where it could go and what it could be. Perseverance allowed me to stay true to an ideal that we could responsibly, innovatively and commercially develop cell therapies for Orthopedic conditions, during a time where many companies were cutting corners to meet high consumer demand for solutions. Everyone wants stem cells to reinvent medical care, but not everyone is willing to do the difficult work and equally difficult execution to make that happen.

I had to watch competitors move faster to profitability and scale, while we meticulously tested our process under self-imposed industry leading rigors and compliance with Federal Law. It was (and is) the right way, but it is also the harder way.

Perseverance comes naturally to me, but it took constant work to maintain the discipline to mature our idea of how a patient’s cells could be used to maximally help them, which was for many years too disruptive for a very conservative medical community. My original idea that we could study and apply a patient’s own cells by thinking of them in terms of cellular “dose” and treatment response to drive customized solutions for different patients and problems, was initially unpopular and took a long time and effort before it became more readily accepted.

I couldn’t see an easier or better way to move Regenerative Medicine and cell therapies into a position of legitimacy any other way. I’m most proud that I was able to hang in there through many difficult periods for the company. Transforming little by little into a world class organization!
